Make Sure You Can Tow It

Half-ton trucks/SUV’s and larger can pull the trailer but there a few things you'll need to check to make sure.  Here is a list you'll want to refer to and make sure you know the capabilities of your vehicle.

  1. First you'll need to check the towing capacity of your vehicle. This can be found in the owners manual of your vehicle and if you don't have a hard copy you can usually find an electronic version on the manufacturers website. Another good resource for this is a towing capacity calculator found on Camping World’s site. There are a few other sites you can find these calculators but always bear in mind these are not official and therefore to get the correct information you should always check the manual.

  2. Once you have the towing capacity of your vehicle you will need to compare it to the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of the trailer. It is 7620 lbs.
NOTE: This is the legal maximum for the trailer but it can be noted that in my experience the actual trailer weight usually varies from this and is a bit less than the maximum. The approx. towing weight of the 26LHS is 6200 lbs. This allows for 500 lbs of dishes, food, clothing, and bedding which is an average weekend amount. Please be aware that this weight if questioned by the authorities would most likely not be taken into consideration as they will usually use towing capacity of the vehicle vs the GVWR of the trailer. If you have specific questions about this feel free to contact me.

  3. Next you will need to check that your vehicle is equipped with both a 7-Pin Connector as well as a Brake Controller. The trailer has it’s own brakes and therefore require both of these items to even get on the road. There are many resources online (YouTube is good for this) that will explain how to both check to see where these are and how to install them if they are not already. Of course if you have reservations about installing them yourself it is best to have a shop install them for you.
NOTE: Even though many vehicles come equipped with a "towing package" not all components are hooked up in the factory and ready to go. I have no idea why this is but even if it's not installed, the wiring at least will be there ready to complete it.

  4. If you find your vehicle cannot tow the trailer or you do not feel comfortable pulling it with your vehicle there a couple options.

    • For a fee we may be able to pull the trailer out to your site for you. Our rates are $200 for within 50 km of GoHideOut plus $4/km over 50km up to a maximum of 150 km one way. For this option we will meet you at the site at a pre-agreed time and give the orientation on site. Then come back to pick up the trailer once you are done. Please contact me for more information.

    • Canadian Car and Truck Rental is a local car rental agency that has tow vehicles available. Be aware that not all rental companies allow this so if you have a favorite agency, check with them first to see if they allow it.
